Adelheid "Ade" Matuschin

March 25, 1919 — September 2, 2011

Adelheid “Ade” Matuschin, age 90 of Ogallala, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2011 at her home.

Born in Germany, March 25, 1919, to Catholic parents, Johann and Maria (Killer) Ritter, Adelheid grew up in Goppingen, ending her education as a surgical nurse. She was stationed in Brackenheim where she fell in love with a patient, Nikolaus Matuschin, who had been born in St. Petersburg, Russia, April 25, 1885. They married in 1945, and had a baby girl, Anni Beatrice, born June 9, 1946. It was her husband’s wish to come to America, which he called “Heaven on Earth.” Through the Church World Organization and a local sponsor, they found their way to Ogallala in January of 1952, where a second baby girl, Mary Louise arrived, July 15, 1953. Not knowing the language and having no money, the early years were a struggle with odd jobs and hard times. However with shear determination they found good jobs, built a home, and put both girls through college.

After 30 years at TRW in Quality Control, Ade enjoyed her retirement years by volunteering at schools, library, museum, hospital, and information booth; playing marbles with her friends; earning a 50 miles pin while swimming; and spending hours at the Senior Center. Having always enjoyed vacation road trips with her family, she continued her travels overseas and reunited with some family members in Germany. While at home, she was adept at knitting and crochet, and a whip at Freecell. Beside her family, her greatest joy was her many friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Bea (Marvin) Cunningham of Ogallala and Mary (Paul) Statz of Nelson, Ne; grandchildren, James Rindom, Carrie Rindom, S. Stephen (Erin Fay) Statz and Nikolaus (Desiree) Statz; great grandchildren, Deja and Sean Polk, Malika, Robert, Rowan and Quinlyn Statz; and other related family members residing in Germany; special friend and care giver, Lanna Zadina and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings; her husband, Nikolaus on July 13, 1980; and two grandsons, Jeremy and Quentin.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ogallala with Pastor John Stubenrouch officiating. Burial will be in the Ogallala Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Monday at the Gubser Funeral Home and at the church prior to services on Tuesday. Online condolences may be sent at gubserfuneralhome.com.

Memorials may be given to the Keith County Senior Center or the Memorial Health Hospice in Ade’s memory. Gubser Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
