Shirley Janet Packard

Shirley Janet Packard, age 77 of Arthur, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2013 at the Indian Hills Manor Nursing Home in Ogallala.

Shirley was born December 26, 1935 in Julesburg, Colorado the daughter of George and Laura (Hardessen) Ballentine. She graduated from the Brule High School in 1953. After attending the Midwest Hair Academy she was employed by the Stewart Beauty Shop in Ogallala.

On March 27, 1960 she married Gerald W. Packard of Arthur. She lived and loved the ranch life where she worked anywhere she was needed. This along with always making sure good food and plenty of it was on the table. Shirley felt there was no such thing as a stranger, whom she quickly befriended with her witty humor. Her favorite things in life were the animals she cared for, the gardens and flowers that she nurtured, the meals she prepared for all those around her and pulling pranks just for fun. She enjoyed sharing all these things with family and friends through her passion for photography and laughter.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years Gerry Packard of Arthur; one son George (Carol) Packard of Ogallala; two daughters Kerri (Chris) Melson of Claude, TX and Lori (Don) Walker of Arther; two brothers, Dayton (Carolyn) Ballentine of Brule and Ray (Pat) Ballentine of Ogallala; two sister in laws Sharon (William) Welsh of Culbertson, NE and Marion Packard of Sterling, CO; nine grandchildren Tyler (Sammy) Walker, Jace, Mikaela and Mackenzie Walker, Sarah and Dana Melson, Garth, Grant and Grady Packard; two great grandchildren Cooper and Cody Walker and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents George and Laura Ballentine and a brother in law Glenn Packard.

Cremation was chosen and there was no visitation. At Shirley’s request private family services were held. Memorials may be directed to the Arthur Betterment Authority Committee in her memory.
