Christopher S. Hurrey

CHRISTOPHER S. HURREY, 53 of Ogallala, passed away Monday, August 14, 2017, at his home.
Chris was born March 9, 1964, in Pensacola, Florida to Robert Charles and Charlotte Kay (Steffey) Hurrey. He attended school in California before enlisting in the United States Navy.
Following his discharge in 1990, Chris returned to California where he worked for Los Angeles County for nearly 25 years as an insurance claims auditor. In 2005, Chris hurt his back and became disabled. On February 5, 2015, Chris married April Nowak in Arizona. The couple eventually made their home in Ogallala to be closer to her family. Not long after their relocation to Ogallala, Chris was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic renal cell carcinoma which he fought bravely until his passing on Monday afternoon.
As a man, Chris had a big heart. He was met with plenty of adversity throughout his life, but Chris tried hard to seek the Lord and to use his own life history as a way to relate and empathize with others in need. Chris was a seeker of God's Truth; his curiosity ultimately led to him attending several different churches and studying a variety of faith teachings. Chris ultimately became convinced of his fundamental need for Jesus and His grace and mercy. There were times throughout his illness that he was angry with God, but he never lost sight of God's importance in his life. Chris wasn't perfect, but the love he showed in life set the tone for how he will be remembered by his family and friends.
Chris was preceded in death by his step father, Bob Riley; and maternal grandparents, Carl and Florence Steffens; paternal grandparents, Steve and Eugene Hurrey.
Survivors include his wife, April Hurrey of Ogallala and their daughter, Angelica Hurrey; 3 daughters from California and Arizona, Jasmine, Jessica, and Justine, and their mother, Janice; 3 step children, David, Christian & Delila; 3 grandchildren, Luke, Jordan & Logan; his mother, Charlotte Riley of Bullhead City, AZ; sister, Christine Hurrey of Bullhead City, AZ; special aunt and uncle, Tim (Judy) Nowak of Ogallala; along with many other relatives and friends.
A memorial has been established in his memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsfuneralhome.com, where the services will be streamed live for those unable to attend.
Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at 10:00a.m. at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Ogallala with Father Bryan Ernest as Celebrant. Interment of cremains with military honors will be at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.
Memorial book signing will be on Tuesday, August 22, 2017, from 1:00p.m. until 5:00p.m. at the Prairie Hills Funeral Home in Ogallala.
