Donald Laverne Steinwart

Donald Laverne Steinwart, age 79, passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Christopher House in Austin, Texas.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 6th at the Elsie United Methodist Church with Pastor Linda Battello officiating. Burial will be in the Elsie Cemetery with military honors rendered by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 2nd at the Gubser Funeral Home.
Don was born June 6, 1932 at Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, the son of Frank Albert and Bessie Marie (Scronce) Steinwart. He attended William and Mary University in Virginia where he studied electrical circuits. He married Laura Anne Cary on February 20, 1955 at Grant, Nebraska, at the home of Mrs. Mary Arterburn.
He joined the U.S. Navy as a Seaman Recruit on March 13, 1951 and was released from active duty on July 1, 1970. As a young man Don started in the belly of the ship, in the galley and boiler room, and literally worked his way all the way up to the bridge, where he made command staff under Commodore Jefferson, Destroyer Squadron III, Pac Fleet. He also held specialties of Ordnance Engineer and Electronic Engineer. He received the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Meritorious Unit Commendation. He loved the Navy, and was a dedicated sailor.
Don and Laura attended many various non-denomination services while in the Navy and he later joined the Lutheran Church while he resided at the Sunset Haven in Grant.
Survivors include his sister, Marge Blaase and sister in law, Mary Steinwart of Ogallala, NE; sons and daughter in laws, Timothy R. and Cynthia Kay Steinwart of Madrid, NE and Michael C. and Bridgette Steinwart of Cozad, NE; daughter and son in law, Cynthia A. and Donald C. Couch of Round Rock, TX; six granddaughters, Rebecca, Laura, Afton and Cassie Schwendiman, Emily Ramsey and Patricia Steinwart; five grandsons, Joshua, Aaron, Miles, Robert and Donald Steinwart; and two great granddaughters, Hannah and Amber Steinwart.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Robert Steinwart; one sister, Lorraine Lungrin, and his wife, Laura Anne.
A memorial has been established in his memory with contributions to be given to the Elsie Methodist Church and the Christopher House in Austin, Texas.
