Donald Duane Wiest

Donald Duane Wiest, age 87 of Ogallala, passed away on Friday, April 6, 2012, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born October 25, 1924 to Fred and Hazel (Dutton) Wiest in Brule, Nebraska. Don graduated from the Brule High School and was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theatre.

Don married Evelyn Kildare in 1946. They raised five children in Ogallala. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife in July of 2010 after 63 years of wedded bliss. Don moved to San Antonio, Texas in May of 2011.

Don was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council # 4979. For most of his life Don was involved in the grocery business, including the 10 years he and Evelyn operated Don’s Market, a neighborhood grocery in Ogallala. Don had been recognized for his 37 years of service as a Volunteer Fireman in Ogallala.

Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl T. Wiest of San Antonio, TX; four sons, Donald E. Wiest and wife Kathy of Superior, NE; Gregory D. Wiest and wife Patty of Lake Oswego, OR; Gerald V. Wiest of Albuquerque, NM; and Joseph L. Wiest and wife Jacki of San Antonio, TX; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and one brother, Loring “Herb” Wiest of Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

A Rosary will be prayed at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 12th at the Gubser Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 13th at St. Luke’s Catholic Church with Fr. Bryan Ernest as celebrant. Burial will be in the Ogallala Cemetery. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Army and the Keith County Veteran’s Organizations. An Honor Guard will be provided by the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department.
