Irma Petersen

Former Ogallala resident Irma Petersen, age 100, of Libertyville, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at Libertyville.

She was born May 19, 1912, on the family farm home near Wallace, the daughter of Harry and Mabel (Kain) Rees. She attended Kearney State College.
Irma taught school in Perkins County before moving to San Francisco, CA, where she worked as a bookkeeper in the shipyards during World War II.

Following the war, she returned to Nebraska. On October 26, 1946, she married Glen Petersen at Marysville, Kansas. They farmed near Madrid.

In 1959, she returned to teaching, and in 1965, the family moved to Ogallala, where she taught math in the Ogallala Middle School until she retired in 1980.
In 1988, she moved to Chicago to live with family. In 1990, the family moved to Dayton, Ohio, and back to Chicago, Illinois before moving to Libertyville in 1995.

She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church and was active in the American Legion Auxiliary while living at Madrid and Order of the Eastern Star while living in Ogallala. Among her hobbies were playing bridge and tending flower gardens.

Survivors include her daughter, Mona Kunio of Libertyville, Illinois; two sons, Alan and wife Marcia Petersen of Leawood, KS, and Rodney and wife Katya Petersen of Plumsteadville, PA; five grandchildren, Nick Kunio, Nora Kostro, Kate Petersen, Molly McDonald and Sonya Petersen; and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and three sisters.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 30th at the Ogallala United Methodist Church with Pastor Chuck Rager officiating. Inurnment will be in the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery south of Maxwell.
