Jay D. Cook, age 75 of Paxton, died Monday, March 25, 2013, with a good friend while proudly showing him his 2013 calf crop.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 28th at the Paxton United Methodist Church with Pastor Kolawole Akinnigbagbe officiating. Burial will be in the Paxton Cemetery with Elks Rites given by the Ogallala Elks Lodge # 1760.
The son of the late Eleanor and Franklin Cook, he was born June 4, 1937, at Wahoo, Nebraska. He attended Wahoo High School and upon graduation enrolled in the University of Nebraska where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science. While attending the university he was a member and President of the AGR fraternity, a member of the livestock judging team and was a Second Lieutenant with the ROTC. It was there that he met his wife, Jayne E. Hepperly, of Paxton, Nebraska. They were married on November 22, 1959 and moved to Paxton in 1961 to farm and ranch with Jayne’s father.
Jay was an active member of the community and a member of the Paxton United Methodist Church. He served 31 years on the Keith County Fair Board, was a member of the Keith County Extension Board and a member of the Elks Lodge. He was an Ak-Sar-Ben Ambassador for the Paxton Community as well as serving on the Bank of Paxton’s Board of Directors from 1984 until the bank was sold to the Pony Express Community Bank. He continued on as a board member for the Pony Express Community Bank.
Jay raised cattle, ran a feedlot operation and farmed North and South of Paxton with his son, Clate Cook. He enjoyed fishing with friends and family, particularly at the Sutherland Reservoir.
Jay is survived by his wife, Jayne, of Paxton; two children, Clate Cook of Paxton and Lori and husband Mark Kripal of North Platte; one grandson, Dalton Kripal; two brothers, Don and wife Eldean Cook of Wahoo, NE and Bob and wife Lolly Cook of Malmo, NE; numerous nieces and nephews along with many friends. Jay was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin and Eleanor Cook and his brother in law, Dan Hepperly.
