John Auwerda

October 14, 1931 — October 26, 2017

JOHN AUWERDA, 86 of Keystone, passed away Thursday, October 26, 2017 at his home.

John was born October 14, 1931 at Cicero, Illinois to Johannes and Ethel (Dykstra) Auwerda. He attended school in Maywood, Illinois, and following his graduation, entered the U.S. Army, where he served in Korea.

On December 27, 1952, John married Marion Nelson at Wheaton, Illinois. Following their union, John was sent overseas, rejoining Marion after his discharge from the service. Their union was blessed with 3 sons: Richard, David, and Robert. John worked in the automobile business in the Chicago area for over 40 years. Following his eventual retirement, John and Marion moved to Kimberling City, MO, to their home on Table Rock Lake. Each year during the last 2 weeks of July, John and Marion entertained a group of family at their home that often totaled more than 30 people. John had a great life, knowing he was blessed and cherishing memories and relationships. John struggled with health issues for many years and ultimately lost his sight, but this never diminished his spirit or gratitude.

John's faith was of tantamount importance in his life. The light of this faith was reflected through his big heart, which was giving and kind. He believed in being a supporter of everyone, not just himself. He was a hard and tireless worker, and instilled this ethic into his own children. When the work was done, John enjoyed spending time on the water, skiing, and making use of his pilot's license.

John was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sons, Richard and Robert; and a grandson, Jacob.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 65 years, Marion, of Keystone; son, Dave (Patty) Auwerda of Keystone; 14 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild; 2 sisters, Shirley (Ron) Russell of KS, Elaine (Larry) Resh of SC, and many other relatives and friends.

Condolences can be shared at prairiehillsfuneralhome.com.

Private graveside services with military honors will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.
