LORENE "SIS" MERCER, 95 of Albuquerque, NM, former longtime resident of Brule, passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Albuquerque.
Sis was born December 6th, 1919 at Brule, NE to Ernest and Marie (Fahrlander) Anderson. She graduated from Brule High School.
On November 23, 1940, Sis married Charles "June" Mercer at Cheyenne, WY. A few years after they were married, Charles was called to serve in WWII while Sis remained in Brule where she cared for their son, Jerry. Their union was later blessed with another son, Robert. In the early 1960’s, June and Sis opened a bulk plant that served farmers in the surrounding area as Frontier Oil. Not long after, they founded Husky Oil, eventually opening service stations in Ogallala, and Brule. Upon their retirement in the early 1980s, they enjoyed wintering in Florida and New Mexico.
June and Sis proudly sponsored a softball team, the Mercer Huskies, for nearly 20 years. The team was a great source of enjoyment and pride for them.
Sis was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church in Brule where she had served as a superintendent of the Sunday School. Also, she was a Charter Member of the Garden Club in Brule.
Sis was preceded in death by her husband in 2013, and brothers, Herman "Pete" Anderson and Robert "Bob" Anderson.
Survivors include her 2 sons, Jerry (Bea) Mercer of Peralta, NM, Robert (Gayle) Mercer of Daytona Beach, FL; 6 grandchildren, Crystal (Charles) Phelps, Cindy Mercer, Randy Mercer, Mandy (David) Kwiatek, Melissa (Mark) Holmes, Michael Mercer; 9 great grandchildren, Nicholas, Samantha & Brandon Phelps, Dirk, Talia, Reese Brown, Lauren & Alec LaBouf & Camden Mercer; along with many other relatives and friends.
A memorial has been established in her memory. Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsfuneralhome.com, where the service will also be streamed live for those unable to attend.
Services will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Congregational Church of Christ of Brule with Pastor Lisa Hadler officiating. Burial will be in the Brule Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, November 6, 2015 from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Prairie Hills Funeral Home.
