Mary Mcchesney

January 17, 1948 — March 23, 2020

MARY E. McCHESNEY, 72, of Ogallala, passed away after a long struggle with cancer on March 23, 2020, at the Sutherland Care Center.

Mary was born January 17, 1948, to Elmer and Agnes (Meyer) Graham. She attended school in Hastings and Kearney before moving to Loveland, where she graduated from High School in 1966.

She married James DeVoe on June 11, 1966. On September 30, 1995, Mary was united in marriage to James McChesney at Lake McConaughy.

Mary loved making memories and clinging to family traditions. Christmas day, for many years, entailed getting up at 4:00 a.m. and giving stockings to her kids and grandkids, followed by a mad dash to load the car and travel to Loveland singing to the oldies station the whole way there to spend time with her family. Easter was always a special time traveling to Loveland and attending church, hiding hundreds of eggs and Easter baskets in the yard for the grandkids. All of the holidays, birthdays, and special occasions, she created just a little bit of magic for the kids.
She made amazing cakes for the grandkids for their birthdays. Our favorites were the castle cake, carousel cake, and a smore cake with the biggest homemade graham cracker you've ever seen.

She enjoyed picnics, attending her grandchildren's sporting events, and anything and everything that involved getting together as a family. Mary was a farm wife, worked at ASC for many years, and drove the city bus. She loved all the people she came in contact with on the bus and, of course, brought the kids treats on the holidays. She always wanted to brighten the kid's day. Her genuine kindness came from her heart and soul. We were all blessed to have known her. She would want all of you to perform an unexpected act of kindness to another person and create just a little magic with your children.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James DeVoe, and husband, James McChesney; her daughter, Stacie Coomes, and her infant son, Todd DeVoe.

Survivors include her son, Shawn (Tina) DeVoe of Ogallala; stepchildren, Jim (Daniella) McChesney of Ogallala and, Melody (John) Deaver of Grant; nine grandchildren, Johnny Deaver, Jill (Trevor) Johnson, Nathan (Christine) Deaver, Jolene Deaver all of Grant, Angela (Andy) Anderson of Kimball, Hunter DeVoe, Bella DeVoe, Broden DeVoe, all of Ogallala, Taylor Coomes of Casper, WY; ten great-grandchildren, Natalie, Russell, Mya, Jake, Jazelle, Nayla, Ray, Skylar, Ava, and Jax; siblings, Kenneth (Joan) Graham of Windsor, CO, Donna Rae Waldron of Winchester, CO, and Judi Jackson of Loveland, CO., along with many other relatives and friends.

A memorial has been established in her memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsfuneralhome.com.

Mary's wish was to be cremated. A private burial will be held on April 2, 2020, at the Ogallala Cemetery. The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date.

Prairie Hills Funeral Home of Ogallala is in charge of arrangements.
