Douglas Edward Nelson

December 25, 1962 — June 11, 2025

Douglas E. Nelson, 62, of Fort Lupton, Colorado, and formerly of Ogallala, passed away on June 11, 2025, as the result of a semi tractor-trailer accident in Weld County, Colorado.

Doug was born on December 25, 1962, in Ogallala, Nebraska, the son of Robert Dwayne and Frances Joan Nelson. He joined older brother, Brent and two years later his brother Scott completed the Nelson Family. Doug's love for trucks began on the living room floor and in the backyard of the family home, where he put many "miles" on his knees driving his toy trucks. He attended Keith County District 7 school, and completed his education at Ogallala High School, graduating with the Class of 1982.

Following high school, Doug worked at various jobs, including driving grain trucks on the family farm, Nelson Agri Corp. He eventually found his calling in trucking, starting his own company, Nelson Trucking, by buying his own truck and grain trailer and hauling grain from the Ogallala area to the Front Range of Colorado. Over the years, he drove for a variety of companies. His work took him across the Midwest, including routes through Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming. Doug took pride in his rig, worked hard, and was known for his "nose to the grindstone" approach. Most recently, he was employed as a company driver for "Now or Never Trucking" out of Greeley, CO and had developed strong relationships with his coworkers.

Doug had lived in Wiggins, Colorado, before settling in Fort Lupton. He was not a man of many words, but those who knew him remember his humor, loyalty, and easygoing nature. Doug loved a good action movie and enjoyed bowling. Doug's personality was unforgettable-spoken softly, but carried far.

Doug was preceded in death by his son, Hunter Nelson; his mother, Joan Nelson; his grandparents, V.A. "Mike" and Vera Harrington, Raymond and Margaret Nelson; and niece-in-law, Rebecca Nelson.

Survivors include his children, Tyler Nelson (Brooke Montano) of Wichita, KS; Alexa Nelson (Michael Lambert) of Thornton, CO; and Jonathan Smith of Weldona, CO; father, Robert Nelson of Grant, NE; brothers, Brent (Mary Jane) Nelson of Ogallala; Scott (Rhonda) Nelson of Emerson, IA; and several nieces and nephews, including Shelbi McDaniel, Peter Nelson, Riley Nelson, Emily Nelson, Makayla Martin, Byron Nelson, Brady Nelson, and several other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at GracePoint Church in Ogallala, with Pastor Curtis Tschetter officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Ogallala Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in Doug's memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsfuneralhome.com <http://prairiehillsfuneralhome.com/>, where the services will be streamed live.
