MELPHA BARNICA, 92 of Julesburg, CO, passed away Friday, July 31, 2015 at the Sedgwick County Memorial Nursing Home in Julesburg.
Melpha was born June 30, 1923 at Clearwater, NE to Wilhelm and Johanna (Heinemann) Brockmoller. She attended rural school at District #57.
On January 28, 1942, she married Kenneth A. Barnica at Chappell, NE. The couple made their home in Big Springs until 1953, when they relocated to Denver, CO. In 1986 they returned to Big Springs, where they lived the rest of their married lives. Kenneth passed away in September of 1986. In recent years Melpha made her home at the Jacob J. & Anne B. Walter Memorial Living Center in Julesburg.
Melpha was a long time member of the United Methodist Church at Big Springs, where she had been active in the United Methodist Women in earlier years. She was a member of the Deuel County Historical Society, past caretaker of the Big Springs Depot Museum and past President of the local chapter of the AARP.
In addition to her husband, Melpha was preceded in death by siblings, Merna (Clyde) Markussen, Rachel (Clifford) Markussen, Donald Brockmoller; brothers-in-law, Wendell Dixon and Amzie Blake.
Survivors include her 2 sisters, Bonnie Dixon and Wilma Blake both of Julesburg, CO; brother, Kermit Brockmoller of Ogallala; sister-in-law, Phyllis Brockmoller of Kearney; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association in her memory. Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsfuneralhome.com, where the service will also be streamed live for those unable to attend.
Services will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at 10:00 AM at United Methodist Church at Big Springs with Rev. Chuck Rager officiating. Burial will be in the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, NE.
