Pete F. Peters

May 27, 1933 — December 18, 2022

PETE PETERS, 89, of Ogallala, passed away December 18, 2022, at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

Pete was born May 27, 1933, on the family farm near Roscoe, Nebraska, to Frank and Verdie (Franken) Peters. He graduated from Ogallala High School with the class of 1950. He subsequently attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

An appointment at the clinic led Pete to meeting his future wife, Wanda Burke. She left the clinic with his heart. On February 18, 1958, the two were married at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Oshkosh. The couple made their home in Ogallala for a brief stint before moving to the farmstead south of Roscoe, where Pete farmed and raised cattle.

Pete was passionate about his vocation as a farmer and cattleman and was respected in his work. Pete also raised buffalo for a time, which was also something he came to be passionate about.

Pete was a great lover of history, and he was recognized as an authority on Oregon Trail history and their settlements in the local area, as well as Civil War History. He enjoyed hunting for artifacts and arrowheads, some of which would end up housed at the Petrified Wood Gallery, where he was a passionate and grassroots contributor.

Pete was a quiet rock for his family. He was intensely devoted to their good, and though he was a man of few words, his love for them was thoroughly understood. His humor was as quick as it was subtle, a brand of its own. Pete had a simplicity about him that was both unique and endearing, evidenced in his decision to name all of his fourteen dogs through the years Jake. Pete's quiet and steady presence will indeed be missed.

Pete was a longtime parishioner of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Ogallala.

A memorial has been established in Pete's memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsfuneralhome.com, where the Mass will be streamed live.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Patricia Smith.
